Sea Spectres

Sea Spectres is a haunting photographic exploration of the boundary where land meets sea, captured through the ethereal lens of long-exposure imagery. This series focuses on the granite blocks that form the erosion-control barriers along the Galveston, Texas shoreline—massive, unyielding forms engineered to defy the ocean’s persistent advance. But rather than emphasizing their industrial purpose, Sea Spectres reveals them as ghostly sentinels suspended in time, shaped not just by human hands but by the relentless sculpting of wind and waves.

In each image, the long exposure smooths the Gulf’s restless waters into a mist-like veil, transforming the hard edges of the granite into otherworldly apparitions. The rocks emerge as dark forms adrift in a silken sea, evoking shipwrecks, ancient ruins, or forgotten monuments slowly being reclaimed by nature. The result is a surreal, meditative visual space that blurs the line between permanence and impermanence, between the material and the spectral.

Galveston’s weathered coast, often seen through the lens of tourism or storm survival, here becomes a stage for quiet drama. Through minimalist compositions and a subdued palette, Sea Spectres invites the viewer to contemplate solitude, resistance, and the quiet dialogue between manmade structures and the immense, patient force of the ocean.
